Simple Hummus

I don’t think I’ve ever posted just a plain old hummus recipe, so here you go. I shouldn’t say ‘plain old’, the humble hummus is a friend of many, loyal and reliable, delicious and nutritious, saving vegans from hunger at parties since forever. Let’s hear it for hummus!

I’m sure you all know the drill with old mate hummus – flavours can be altered with the interchanging of spices and the addition of other tasties like roasted garlic, sundried tomatoes and herbs. But this here is what I’d call my standard hummus.

Simple Hummus

1 Β½ cups cooked chickpeas
2 Tbsp unhulled tahini
ΒΌ cup lemon juice
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 Tbsp olive oil
1 tsp cumin powder
Β½ tsp smoked paprika
Salt (optional)

Making hummus isn’t rocket science – you can just chuck all the ingredients together and blend them up. But I do have an order of preference – I start with the lemon juice, garlic and oil and blend until smooth. Next add the tahini and blend again until combined. Then add spices and chickpeas and blend until smooth. If mix is too thick, try adding a little more oil or some of the juice from the chickpeas (or water). Taste for seasoning, and serve with some olive oil and fresh parsley.

  1. πŸ™‚ It’s true; if there is nothing else at a party I can find a tub of hummus at the nearest grocer and re-join the festivities without being hungry – oh how many times this has happened! My sisters always ask me to make hummus for get-togethers and I often try to zaz it up with other flavors but they invariably want me to bring the classic! I like the density of your humus, it’s the way I’d make it.

    1. It really is a lifesaver isn’t it? I’m definitely a fan of mix ups, but sometimes classic is best. My nanna always makes the best hummus (in my opinion) and she just throws in whatever is on hand/in the garden. I can never seem to replicate it, but she makes an amazing greenish one with basil and chives.

  2. Hummus possibilities are ENDLESS! It’s a staple in my weekly food list whether it’s store bought, made from scratch or otherwise. My sister is hooked, too, so that’s awesome and she’s not even veg. Yes! I am participating in Vegan MoFo again this year! I Can’t wait! I’m looking forward to your posts!

    1. Totally, it’s so versatile! I go through waves of being obsessed with it and then not eating it for a while. Needless to say, at the moment I’m in the obsessed period. Yay, looking forward to reading your posts for the month πŸ˜€

    1. Ooh I hope that improves it – the store bought ones do tend to be super smooth and creamy don’t they. I sometimes make it in my high speed blender, though this time I did it in the food processor as when I’m just doing a smallish recipe it can be a pain to get out of the bottom of the blender!
